  • 12.5 million people from African societies were shipped as slaves between the years of 1500 and 1866
    • 1.8 million died during transportation
    • slaves were captured and sold, displaced from home cultures, forced to work, took beatings and brandings, and suffered from being broken up from their families
  • the slave trade brought an African presence to the European and Native American people
    • added elements of their culture to the European and Native American people
      • elements including: religious ideas, musical&artistic traditions, and cuisine
  • The Americas slave trade was distinct
    • the size of the traffic of slaves was huge
    • the location of the slave trade was very central to the colonial America
